The St Columbs union is currently celebrating its eighty-seventh anniversary, having been founded officially on 5 November 1929, the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the college itself.
The Alumnus Illustrissimus of 2016 is Mr Maurice Harron.
As an artist and educator Maurice has made a significant contribution to art practice and education. He is a recognised and successful artist, being comissioned for major public artworks in Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, where he has also exhibited in public and private galleries. For nearly twenty years he has worked to address issues of belief, ethnicity and political tension through his sculpture. Working in public locations, he has made works which explore themes connected to social, historical and cultural identity. The “Alumnus Illustrissimus” 2016 will be presented to Maurice at the College Union Dinner in the City Hotel on Friday, 18th November.
